India's Semiconductor ambitions are gathering pace, The government's flagship India Semiconductor Mission, launched in 2021, laid the foundation for building a domestic chip ecosystem. This effort has been further strengthened with the announcement of India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 in the Union Budget 2026-27, which places greater emphasis on materials, equipment, research and supply chain development.
At the same time, demand is rising across sectors such as including consumer electronics, automotive electronics, telecommunications, artificial intelligence (AI), electric vehicles (EVs), and data centers. Industry estimates suggest that India's semiconductor market could reach USD 300 billion by 2035. This clearly highlights both the scale of the opportunity and the need to build a more resilient Semiconductor ecosystem in the country.
While much of the focus remains on fabrication facilities and investment announcements, semiconductor manufacturing requires more than production capacity alone. As manufacturing scales, long-term competitiveness will increasingly depend on process stability, manufacturing consistency, advanced materials expertise, and the ability to meet global semiconductor quality and reliability standards.
The Materials Behind Every Chip
Modern semiconductor devices operate under increasingly demanding conditions. As chip architectures become smaller, faster, and more densely integrated, manufacturers must maintain extremely tight tolerances across packaging, interconnect, bonding, and plating processes.
In these environments, advanced materials directly influence semiconductor performance, reliability, yield, and manufacturing stability.
Among these, precious metal-based functional materials including platinum (Pt), gold (Au), silver (Ag), and platinum group metals (PGMs) such as palladium (Pd), ruthenium (Ru), rhodium (Rh) and Iridium (Ir) play a critical role in enabling the performance, reliability, and longevity of semiconductor devices.
In Semiconductor and Electronics manufacturing, these properties directly influence performance and reliability. Gold, for example, is widely used in bonding wires that connect chips to packages due to its excellent conductivity and resistance to corrosion, ensuring stable performance over time. Palladium and silver are used in components and coatings to support reliable connections, resist wear, and maintain performance under high temperatures. In semiconductor testing, rhodium-containing probe pin materials help achieve the high strength, elastic limit, hardness, and electrical conductivity required for accurate and reliable device testing.
Even small variations in material behavior can affect signal integrity, thermal performance, interconnect reliability, and long-term device stability, particularly in high-performance semiconductor applications.
Why Material Choice Matters More in India Today
For engineers and manufacturers in India, material choice directly affects yield, reliability and long-term performance, especially as the industry scales up production. In high-volume environments, consistency is as important as quality.
This becomes even more critical as devices grow smaller and more complex, requiring greater precision at every stage. As India moves towards more advanced manufacturing, materials are no longer just inputs. They play a central role in ensuring consistent output.
